Ukrainian police clearance certificate for Ireland: Garda vetting, work and study

If you have lived in Ireland for a while and now need Garda vetting — to work or volunteer with children or vulnerable adults, or for a college placement — you will usually be asked for a police certificate from every country where you lived for six months or more. For Ukrainians this means a Ukrainian police clearance certificate with an English translation. Here is how to get one while you stay in Ireland.

Who is asked for it

Irish organisations that use Garda vetting typically ask for an overseas police certificate from anyone who has lived outside the island of Ireland for six or more continuous months since the age of 16. The certificate must be an original, cover the whole period you lived in Ukraine and — an important detail — be dated after you left Ukraine. A certificate you obtained before moving is usually not accepted.

How to get it without travelling to Ukraine

  • You do not need to come to Ukraine — photos of your documents are enough.
  • With an ID card: photos of both sides and the certificate of your registered place of residence. With a booklet passport: pages 1 and 2, the page with your latest registration and your tax number certificate.
  • The certificate itself takes about two weeks. With an apostille and an English translation, allow 3–3.5 weeks.
  • We send the original to Ireland by courier.

Translation into English

A certificate in Ukrainian is accepted only with an English translation, usually a certified one. We translate the certificate together with all stamps and notes, spell your name exactly as in your international passport, and certify the translation in the format the receiving organisation asks for. Do you need an apostille?

Irish vetting guidance usually asks for an original certificate and a translation and does not mention an apostille. Some employers, colleges or immigration procedures may still ask for one. Check with the organisation before ordering — if it is needed, we obtain the apostille of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.

How recent must it be?

A Ukrainian certificate does not show an expiry date — the receiving organisation decides what is recent enough. In our experience, European bodies usually accept certificates up to about six months old. Order it once you know when you will submit it.
